When, in the aftermath of 2010 floods, the Pakpur Foundation pioneered building a planned new village for rehabilitation of flood affected people in Shahgarh, in Southern Punjab, we realized how marginalized our rural population has always been (even before the catastrophe had hit them). But since the hundred home "Pakpur Village" rose out of a sand dune (along with its school, playgrounds, greenbelts, women vocational training institute, dispensary, community center, area for economic activity, and several shops) the seeds of change have already been sown. Today, Pakpur, Noorghazi is a thriving community of a thousand strong residents, where kids go to school, people live in sanitary environs and drink clean water, where women have doubled their household income, and where farmers raise livestock, the way the developed world does. At Pakpur-Noorghazi, small private enterprise is taking hold while residents run their own community and sustain a livelihood they had not dreamt of just a year before...these Pakistanis now have a real chance at life!
